Live Action Role-Playing (LARP or LARPing) began to form in the late 1970s, as an outgrowth of role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons. The game itself can take many forms but all versions share the common element that participants physically act out some or all of their characters' activities.

The different genres of LARP include various historical, military and horror settings with the most popular version being the classic sword & sorcery-based theme. The game play can vary from capture-the-flag to improvised theatre styles, with the most extreme versions acting out full-contact combat situations with the use of home-made and foam weapons.

Today LARPing is most popular in North America, Europe, Russia and Australia. An industry has started to develop around LARP activities. Large games with thousands of participants are organized by for-profit companies, various LARP books are published and an increasingly professional industry sells costume, armor and foam weapons.
